Where a fire on site is extinguished using water, there is a danger that the water used for fire-fighting may become contaminated from hazardous substances. Where this is the case, it is essential to prevent the fire water running off site as it may cause contamination of rivers. Fire water retention facilities are designed to hold the spent firewater until it can be disposed of safely.

Many IPPC licenses require that a Fire Water Retention Assessment be carried out. This will review the substances stored on site, the likelihood of a fire occurring and the sensitivity of the receiving water.
