A recent UK survey of 500 business users suggests that 95% of businesses don’t recycle their old computer equipment, instead preferring to destroy them to prevent the extraction of sensitive data.

Not only is such disposal likely to be breach of Waste Management legislation, it is denying others the use of a recyclable resource.  Oxfam have a good programme whereby unwanted computes are taken in, the data is erased and the computer is refurbished and sold with a 6 month guarantee.  Such initiatives are to be recommended.  Business should consider using such organisations to recycle their old unwanted PCs.
