Richard Deeney of Environmental Efficiency recently visited Mulroy Mussel Farm in Donegal along with representatives from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Bord Bia and Mabbett to learn about the environmental and sustainability issues relating to aquaculture.
Origin Green
Environmental Efficiency is currently working with Mabbett in the verification of Origin Green members’ Annual Reports. Bord Bia has devised the Origin Green scheme to promote the green credentials and sustainability of Irish Food. The verification of the Origin Green Annual Reports and Sustainability Plans is an essential step in ensuring that Irish food meets the sustainability requirements of discerning buyers.
Origin Green is Ireland’s food and drink sustainability programme. It is a voluntary programme, led by Bord Bia, that brings together the Irish food industry – from farmers to food producers, retailers to foodservice operators – with the common goal of sustainable food production. This programme enables Ireland’s food industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively. Crucially, Origin Green is about measuring and improving how this is done on an ongoing basis.
Origin Green members include farmers and food businesses such as food and beverage manufacturers, retailers and foodservice operators.
Origin Green members are required to submit an Annual Report detailing their performance against sustainability targets. Members are required to have selected targets from the areas of raw materials, manufacturing and social sustainability. The target period will span a number of years, typically between three and five years. The Annual Report then details progress with those targets. Independent verifiers engaged by Bord Bia then assesses the Annual Reports.
