Odour and Dust Monitoring: Assessing Impact and Ensuring Compliance
Sometimes stack emissions and other processes may give rise to odour complaints from the public. These odours may be from industrial processes, slurry pits, waste products or food processing. Dust can also be a nuisance due to soiling of windows and cars.
Environmental Efficiency can undertake monitoring and odour assessments and determine compliance with limits in relevant standards and limits specified in the licence or permit.
EPA IPPC/IED licences or local authority permits may stipulate that noise be monitored from the site to assess the level of impact upon the surrounding environs.
Monitoring for dust can be by use of Bergerhoff dust jars or sticky pads. These are generally left on site for 30 days and subsequently analysed. Odours such as ammonia of hydrogen sulphide can be assessed using long term diffusion tubes, again these are left on site for 30 days or more in some cases.
In additional to monitoring using various items if equipment, a sniff test can be performed to assess the impact of nuisance odours. This involves two experienced assessors walking the site boundary and assessing the smells. This work is carried out in accordance with the relevant EPA standard.
