In the UK all oil containers over 200 liters must be bunded. The widely used steel oil drum is of 205 liters capacity and therefore this is a wide ranging requirement. This regulation has been responsible for a dramatic fall in oil pollution incidents.
In Ireland there is no equivalent regulation. However, holders of environmental licenses and permits (e.g. IPPC, IED and Waste Licences/Permits) often have a condition requiring all hazardous materials to be bunded. In addition, planning conditions may have a similar requirement.
