A bund, in simple terms, is a containment around an area where hazardous liquids are handled, processed or stored. The type of bund most often seen consists of four walls and a base surrounding tank. If the tank leaks, the leak will be contained by the bund.

For bunds to be effective, they must be of sufficient size to contain the volume of any likely leak and be impervious to the liquid. Bunds are usually constructed of reinforced mass concrete, other types include prefabricated steel or plastic bunds.

The general sizing rules for bunds requires that they hold 110% of the tank volume where there is just one tank in the bund. Where there are two or more tanks in a bund, the general rule is that the bund must be greater than 110% of the largest tank, or 25% of the total tank volume, whichever is the greater.
